Nuchal cord is a term given to the situation where there are one or more loops of umbilical cord wrapped around the baby neck while in the womb (intrauterine). This occur in about one fourth of deliveries.

Complications may include; tight cord around the neck syndrome (tCAN syndrome), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), fetal developmental delay, neonatal anemia, decreased fetal movements, in rare situations intrauterine fetal death (IUFD).

Routine prenatal ultrasound scan (antenatal scan) with 2D and Doppler interrogation can help detect this issue. This approach will inform your antenatal clinic nurses, midwives and Obstetrician to be well prepared in managing your safe delivery and the wellbeing of your baby.
